Why does my new aluminum pot turn black when I boil water? How can I fix it?

Date:Feb 28, 2026

The blackening of a new aluminum pot after boiling water is not a quality issue, but a normal chemical reaction.

Reason for blackening: Water usually contains dissolved iron salts. Because aluminum is more reactive than iron, when a new aluminum pot (whose oxide film is not yet dense enough) boils water, the aluminum reacts with the iron salts in the water, displacing the iron ions and adhering them to the pot's surface. These black substances are actually tiny iron particles, making the pot appear black.

Solutions:

No treatment needed: This black substance is iron, harmless to humans, and will not affect the pot's lifespan. It can be used continuously. With repeated use, a more stable oxide film will form on the pot's surface, and the blackening will stop.

Restore shine: If you are bothered by the color, you can try dissolving it with an acidic substance.

Vinegar method: Add some vinegar and water to the pot, boil it, and let it soak for a while. The black color should be removed.

Apple peel method: Put fresh apple peels in a pot, add water, and boil for 15 minutes. Then rinse with clean water; the aluminum pot will regain its shine.

Cooking acidic foods: Cooking acidic foods, such as tomato soup, once or twice, will also have the same effect.
